Job Title:  Project Engineer

Reporting to: Operations Manager (Mech)

Main Purpose of the Role

The Project Engineer is a hands-on individual who will prepare 3D models and 3D/2D drawings for the manufacturing of mechanical handling equipment and systems, in addition to overseeing the design activities of CAD Engineers assigned to a project. The project Engineer will also be responsible for reviewing project specifications to ensure adherance as well as developing and collating relevant project documentation. The role will also involve regularly liaison with the works and site teams as well as the client and suppliers.

This position requires good technical, organisational and communication skills. An ideal candidate will have previous education in mechanical designs broadened by experience in mechanical handling sectors. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking the project specification as a basis, design layouts and specific components on CAD to include but not be limited to the following:

A) Steel structures, gantries, and walkways.

B) Sheet metal parts, chutes & hoppers.

C) Various types of Conveyors.

D) Guarding to stated safety performance level.

  • Optimise the design for cost, functionality, and manufacturability.
  • Provide drafting and design expertise to assist CAD Engineers in the detailing and procurement of the system.
  • Design review CAD Engineer outputs to ensure designs are accurate and suitably prepared for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Perform data entry functions to fully specify and document engineering designs.
  • Produce and review the production of product BOMs.
  • Participate in project stage gate meetings as required.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvements of engineering systems and processes.
  • Attend conference calls and on-site meetings with clients as directed by the Project Manager.
  • Travel as required to support projects to carry out surveys and liaise with installation teams / subcontractors. 

Context of the Role

Reporting to the Operations Manager (Mech) who will provide management and coordination, Project management who will be responsible for day-to-day management of project Engineers/CAD Engineers assigned to their project. Responsibility for management of the CAD Engineers on a day-to-day basis. Pro-curement team to assist in order placement and resolution of any queries deriving from the BOM. Site Installation teams to resolve any queries and Sub-contractors and suppliers used to deliver the above.

Core Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of system design experience in a Mechanical Handling System environment.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in relevant Engineering discipline 
  • Proficient in 2D and 3D modelling CAD design programs. AutoCAD & Inventor experience is essential. Able to create General Arrangements/ Layouts and manufacturing drawings to a high standard.
  • Understanding of design, build and project delivery methods.
  • Strong math and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work will under pressure adhering to strict programmes.
  • Highly organised and attention to detail necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of unit cost pricing and conceptual estimating.
  • Proficient in Word and Excel.

General Comments

Part of this role will involve site visits to Airside security restricted areas. Therefore, a DBS check will be carried out and the Project Engineer will need to provide 5 years employment history in order to obtain relevant security passes.
